Late Afternoon Meditation

No one can see their reflection in running water. It is only in still water that we can see. ~ Taoist proverb

The river water was so clear and moving so slow. The stillness enveloped me.

In the reflection the leaves that had fallen in the river appear to be back on the branches.

There are still some leaves hanging on the maples.

This tree was filled with yellow polka dot patterns.

It’s a fungi that likes maples… kinda beautiful?

We continued on… winding river… winding trails, slanting bridges over slow moving water.

It was one of those afternoons that the light called me from tree to tree.

The leaves on these trees sometimes last all winter long, I don’t know why but I love that they do.

The birds were feasting on bugs.

The squirrels were collecting acorns.

I was collecting photos… I sat on the ground trying to get just the right angle of this dried up tulip tree branch. I’ve yet to see a tulip tree in bloom in summer?

I wonder what this is?

or this… I wonder why these branches are sprouting in mid – November?

It was a long… slow… lovely afternoon. Sunny was hungry and was howling on the bridge near the parking lot asking me to please finish up so he could go home and eat (I forgot to fill my pocket with biscuits). I reluctantly listened to his request, I could have stayed till it got dark.

P.S. If you have time, check out this post from the spring with dried tulip tree blossoms and lingering leaves. (When I read what I wrote months ago, I feel like such a new person, yet the same. It’s fun to reflect on who I was and who I am becoming.)

You’re like me — you look at leaves on a tree that aren’t quite “right” and say, “Wow! Isn’t that a great pattern!” It’s the fun of seeing and you saw some beauties in your world of reflection. I’m going to need to think of new adjectives with which to praise you!

I love the way you captured the reflection of the leaves “on” the trees. Next time you need to pack a lunch for Sunny. 🙂 Beautiful fall details.

We have the same maple fungi in our M state.
The light and leaves and reflection… Your writing in this one wound like your walk.
I am starting to feel some of that creative curiosity alive in me again through your posts.
It’s making winter coming so much more bearable bc it’s not just gray I see or dry I feel. You ate retraining my body !
    Love you

Christine…you inspired me so much I went out looking for drying, fall like decay in nature. And then I become very upset with myself because I was not finding the treasures you so beautifully post and gave up in disgust with myslef that I could not find what you find…rivers, mushrooms, leaves decaying as they prepare for a new season…I have to admit it took me a couple of days before I realized (nothing like a hit to the head) that I live in the desert. Now to train my thoughts to see the beauty in what my current experience is providing…you would be proud of me, I found dew on the blossoming lantana in my backyard yesterday…now to figure out how to get in the right position to catch the reflecting sparkle…and I followed a bee as it flew from blossom to blossom….and I had beautiful running thoughts of you streaming through my mind as I took a look at my backyard through “Christine colored glasses”…thank you and I love you! Susan
